I have promised myself and you, gentle reader, that I will not rant on the bizarre and downright obstructive lunacies of the modern rail "system" when faced with a simple bicycle.
For a dad with 3 children who enjoy a cycle ride, the railway companies' practices beggar belief. And should you be daft enough to think a tandem is a very practical and enjoyable addition to family cycling, don't try taking a tandem on a train. It is a LOT easier to arrange a trainload of nuclear waste from Sellafield.
Thank the good lord for the wiser and friendlier train guards who probably put their jobs on the line by allowing a little sanity!
For what it's worth, these are the current (January, 2006) arrangements on rail companies "serving" stations on or near the Cycle Route; worth checking here for up-to-date changes.
- West Yorkshire Metro - coordinates and supports public transport in the county. Timetables and routes.
- Northern Trains operates most of the local trains in the county. A maximum of two cycles (but not tandems/trailers) may travel on any service "where space permits" (guard's discretion - so be prepared not to be allowed on during rush hours!); they do have some of the friendliest and most accommodating train guards I have come across, though.
- Leeds-Garforth (York and Selby Line)
- Leeds-Castleford-Pontefract (Pontefract Line)
- Leeds-Castleford-Normanton-Wakefield (Kirkgate)-Darton (for West Bretton) (Hallam Line - the SLOW train to Sheffield!)
- Leeds-Wakefield (Westgate)-Fitzwilliam (for Hemsworth) (Wakefield Line)
- Leeds/Wakefield-Huddersfield-Slaithwaite-Marsden (Huddersfield Line)
- Leeds-Bradford (Interchange)-Halifax-Mytholmroyd-Hebden Bridge (Caldervale Line)
- Leeds/Bradford (Forster Square)-Shipley-Keighley-Steeton and Silsden (Airedale Line)
- Leeds/Bradford (Forster Square)-Guiseley-Menston-Ilkley (Wharfedale Line)
- Huddersfield-Brockholes (for Holmfirth/Holmbridge)-Denby Dale (Penistone Line)
- Keighley & Worth Valley Railway (tel:- 01535 645214) - all trains have a guard's van, and bicycles are carried free without booking or restrictions.
- The "family short-cut" - cuts out some strenuous hills; a gentle cycle from Steeton into Keighley, and take the train up! Keighley-Oakworth-Haworth-Oxenhope.
- First TransPennine - only two bikes (no tandems) allowed on most trains; in theory, a reservation (24 hours in advance) is necessary, but I've not needed one so far. Bikes travel free.
