»  To Pests and Disease Control

A vixen on the site raises a set of cubs every year.   We have no problems with rabbits, squirrels or rats, and very few mice.   Neither can we have hedgehogs or frogs.   Pest? - or pest control!

  • They play in freshly sown seed-beds.   Weaving a network of garden twine around and across the bed seems to discourage the foxes, just as it does the pigeons.
  • They raided my potatoes last year - and did an immense amount of damage to my maincrop.   A small price to pay perhaps for everybody else being free of rabbits, but that was little consolation.   I've planted my potatoes this year so that there are no "tunnels" down which they can sneak - and I will be able to see any damage very quickly.   They seem to have definite preferences - for Valor and Yukon Gold, so far.
  • They follow regular paths through the brambles and brush.   Male human urine on these paths discourages them, easy to arrange!
  • If all else failed, I'd have to try Renardine.
