Please do not snigger - summer is officially here, and the fullness of the harvest.   Remember to be think ahead to autumn and winter crops - some of the winter brassicas need to be sown and tended.

General Tasks

»  Continue successional sowings.
»  Weeding.
»  Watering if weather is dry..
»  Watch for any pests/diseases.
»  Sow short summer green manures.



Potato/Tomato family (Solanums)

»  Watch for signs of early blight.

»  Harvesting - lift Early Potatoes as required.



Bean/Pea family (Legumes)

»  Harvesting - Broad Beans (spring sowing), Peas and French Beans.



Brassica family

»  Feed brassicas plants.
»  Sow Spring and winter Cabbage (without fertiliser or manure).
»  Sow main-crop Turnip, Winter Radishes.

»  Harvesting - Cabbages, Radishes, Rocket, early Turnips.



Root vegetables

»  Harvesting - Carrots.



Onion family (Alliums)

»  Transplant leeks if not already done.

»  Harvesting - Spring Onions, Onions - Autumn sown.



Other vegetable families

»  Limit pumpkins to 2 per plant.
»  Earth up sweetcorn roots; shake plants to help pollination.
»  Still time for a last sowing of beetroot and chard.

»  Harvesting - Beetroot, Cucumbers (pick at 6 inches), Courgettes (pick at 4 inches), and Gherkins (pick at 4 inches), Lettuce, Spinach.



Herbs

»  Remove flower heads from mints and lemon balm.



Fruit

»  Prune summer raspberries which have finished fruiting.

»  Harvesting - Gooseberries, Raspberries, Blackcurrants, Redcurrants, Strawberries.
