Winter proper has closed in. There'll be a few gloriously "bracing" days, just enough to get the essentials done.
Otherwise, it's time to reflect on the past year and dream for the new; sort my rotation, order seeds and seed potatoes, and look after crops in store.
General Tasks
» Digging if the weather allows it, and if your soil is not too cold, wet or waterlogged.
» Clear and burn any rubbish which will not compost

» Harvesting - Check any crops in store for disease, damage or rots.
Potato/Tomato family (Solanums)
» If seed potatoes arrive, lay out to chit
Bean/Pea family (Legumes)
» Nothing doing.
Brassica family
» Harvesting - Brussels Sprouts, Cabbage (Winter and Savoy), Kale, Swede, and Winter Radishes.
Root vegetables
» Harvesting - Carrots, Parsnip, Salsify and Scorzonera.
Onion family (Alliums)
» Open onion/shallot sets and lay out to stop rot and/or sprouting
» Harvesting - Leeks.
Other vegetable families
» Clean Asparagus beds ready for spring, and mulch with well rotted manure or compost before growth starts.
» Harvesting - Winter Spinach.
Herbs
» Nothing doing.
Fruit
» Mulch rhubarb crowns well with compost or well rotted manure
» Plant new fruit bushes and raspberry canes as soon as you get them, and any time until February.
