Deepest darkest winter.

Not much at all to do on the plot, except on the fruit bed - mulch the rhubarb and plant any new trees or bushes.

Chit your seed potatoes, and look after your onion sets.

General Tasks

»  Try to get your digging done before or after February; the soil is likely to be too cold, wet or waterlogged to do very much this month.
»  Add lime, if necessary, to last year's potato bed (at least 6 weeks before/after manuring)

»  Harvesting - Check crops in store - remove any doubtful potatoes, onions, and roots.

Potato/Tomato family (Solanums)

»  Chit seed potatoes.

Bean/Pea family (Legumes)

»  Nothing doing.

Brassica family

»  Spring clean Brassica beds.
»  Feed spring cabbage.

»  Harvesting - Broccoli (Winter Sprouting), Brussels Sprouts, Cabbage (Winter and Savoy), Kale.

Root vegetables

»  Sow Parsnip (in week 4? - but probably still too early).

»  Harvesting - Parsnip; lift the last of the salsify and scorzonera before they regrow, and use up the last of your stored carrots.

Onion family (Alliums)

»  Plant shallots (in week 4).
»  Sow first spring onions.

»  Harvesting - Leeks.

Other vegetable families

»  Harvesting - Winter Spinach, Chard; use up the last of any stored beetroot before they regrow.

Herbs

»  Divide Chives, Sage, and Thyme and cut back excess growth.

Fruit

»  Lift some mature rhubarb crowns, split and replant; mulch of compost over rhubarb crowns.
»  Last chance to plant new bushes and rasp canes.
