What would an allotment in Yorkshire be without its stand of rhubarb!

  • For an established stand, all it needs is a sunny spot, and an annual dressing of compost or well-rotted manure in January or February.
  • Remove any flower heads which develop through the summer; keep them watered.
  • The crowns should be lifted every five years or so and divided
  • To get new plants, lift a mature crown between October and March. Divide it into pieces; each piece should have at least one bud. Set buds in holes, about 36 inches apart, with plenty well-rotted manure or compost.
  • Don't harvest rhubarb for the first year - give the plants a chance to get well established.
