What is an allotment?
- A plot of land, 300 square yards in area, more or less! You can rent a whole plot - but half or even quarter plots can also be available for the less ambitious.
How do I get one?
- Visit your local site and find out what's available - have a chat with some of the existing plot-holders. A summer Sunday afternoon is usually a good time to catch people!
- Contact Mr John Hardcastle, Leeds City Council Allotment Officer, on (0113) 2375230. He is based at The Farm House, Red Hall Lane, Leeds LS17 8NB.
- Or contact your local parish council; you can download a list of contact details from Leeds City Council.
How much will it cost?
- A full-size plot - about £25.00 per year; less for a smaller plot, and discounted again for senior citizens, people on benefits, and students. Plus £10.00 per year if your plot has a water supply.
What are you getting yourself into?
- Allotment law is a "wonderful" mixture of archaic law and current planning practices; don't panic - check whether the allotment site is a statutory site, and read your tenancy agreement.
- What to look for when you're offered a plot - just a few random thoughts!
